Sick of sailing?

Submitted by patho on Fri, 17/08/2007 - 14:03

Sailing is truly one of the greatest pastimes imaginable, except for the fact that you can get so terribly sick during heavy weather at sea (some lucky individuals seem to be genetically spared for this ordeal). So what could you do to make the best of this?

Recommendation

  1. Eat/drink & take Touristil 1/2 prior to departure
  2. 1st day keep taking Touristil every 6 hours
  3. On 2st take Touristil again, but don't repeat if you feel OK
  4. From 3rd day onwards you don't tend to get that sick again

BRiGS

Bakboord-Rood / Groen-Stuurboord
Red = political left / StuuRboord R from Right
Babort / Tribord

Port wine should be left alone when it is red
i.e. port (left) red, so starboard (right) green

Crash-course

Groen op groen = doen
Rood op rood = geen nood

1 foot approx. 30 cm so 1 meter is 10 cm longer then 3 feet
20 foot approx. 6 meters compare with small box container
40 foot twice as long i.e. large box container

SeaClear II freeware: http://www.sping.com/seaclear (freeware). With MapCal II tool included in SeaClear, you can calibrate scanned maps and convert them to the lighter WCI format. Scan the maps in A4 parts, stitch them with software such as GIMP and reduce size down to 30 percent, because images larger than 15 MB take too long to load in MapCal (level of detail will be more then sufficient). Use small netbook attached with Velcro straps on navigation table.
